easter-hors-d'oeuvresIn the Event Industry we talk a LOT about what is going on the dinner table: and I don’t just mean food. A vital part, but the cliché is true: you eat with your eyes first. For a special family occasion of almost a dozen people there were other things to think about as well. Like a little spring flower arrangement in egg cups:easter-flowersusing the flowers from a $10 baby bouquet from Aspen Marketplace, Hoboken’s iteration of Garden of Eden. Why are there little, tiny holes in those plastic eggs? No matter, a dab of hot glue and the eggs can hold enough water.easter-flowers-2Kellogg’s extends its Rice Krispies treat brand with Hidden Surprise Easter Eggs, and I added some springy sprinkles from NY Cake since I love color in desserts.rice-krispies-treatsThe bunny seemed happy:rice-krispies-tableAt my Mom’s table for holidays we use the family Mikasa china pattern:easter-tableI love her special seasonal touches throughout the house every time I visit: a colorful flag at the front door, orchids in the kitchen, 3 kinds of tulips in the bathroom in beautiful old bottles, pots of cheery flowers on the windowsill keeping the bunnies company, silk flower rings on the candlesticks and in the centerpiece, and satin bows in shades of spring tying the linen napkin at each place setting. Even a small touch makes each guest feel special. John didn’t even want to untie his!easter-table-sectionsEaster spiral ham: like. We enjoyed this one from Trader Joe’s a favorite family destination. I’m always impressed that the one on 6th Avenue in Chelsea can be packed with tons of people on line even in the middle of the day.flowers-and-hamMy Mom bakes this sweet Easter bread every year, the recipe originally from a magazine and now carefully printed on an index card. Growing up I loved the yeasty scent of the rings rising under tea towels on the counter. A new creation was birds’ nests made from chow mein noodles held together with chocolate. We must also have a JELL-O mold at every family gathering and I’m always impressed when my Aunt Liz successfully unmolds it. Many varieties have met the table over the years, sometimes two at a time! The cute Woodland Friends Easter Egg Holders are by my new favorite blogger Lia Griffith: love her tagline “handcraft your life” and I’ve been meaning to make her paper flower patterns. easter-dessertSpeaking of crafting, I love snail mail: such a sweet, tangible touch, especially these days. Thanks to my neighbor and childhood friend Kate from Koru Wedding Shoppe for this bunny butt card. We’ve known each other since kindergarten when we started all sorts of projects together and you can see more of hers on Koru Wedding Style. Hope everyone had a lovely weekend, whatever you were celebrating.easter-card

Peonies

The Monday snowstorm has already melted and it didn’t stop the progression of the seasons. Happy Spring Equinox today, happy warmer days are ahead! I’ve been thinking about patience lately and looking forward to spring finally arriving. So here are some shots of what’s in bloom in NYC.

tulips

Tulips

I fell in love with the flower market on 28th Street slowly, becoming more and more curious as I whooshed through for one thing or another at the beginning of a work day, on a mission for just the right items for multiple events at a time.

hyacinth

As I had more time to look around I realized what a bountiful living museum it is to flowers from all over the world: colors, textures and scents.

ranunculus

Ranunculus

Each variety has its own presence, some quiet, some bursting.

Clockwise from upper left: Hellebores, Daffodil, Lilac, Poppy

And some will be opening up more very soon as we wait patiently for warmer weather and gentle breezes.
